Exploring Mount Merapi

Mount Merapi is a beautiful volcano

When we got up this morning, our driver already expected us for our day trip to explore Mount Merapi. As soon as we left the city of Yogyakarta, we could admire the volcano in all it’s beauty.

Ready for the Jeep adventure!

Ready for the Jeep adventure!

I could hardly believe my eyes and ears when we stopped at a Jeep checkpoint and Mom and Dad told me that we will be exploring the volcano’s slope by Jeep! 😀

The road is pretty bumpy

The road is pretty bumpy

Since the roads were pretty bumpy and dusty, we were given masks to protect our faces from the dust.

As we were departed pretty early, we were almost alone at all the planned stops and could take very beautiful photos. Can you imagine that the deep valley which you can see in the photos didn’t exist before Merapi’s eruption in 2010? 😯
The lava streams dug it! 😯
Our Jeep driver explained us that the lava was so hot that even after 3 years only the top 30 centimetres of the lava layer had cooled down and if you dug a hole more than 30 centimetres deep, you could still cook in the lava!! 😯

That's the famous bunker

That’s the famous bunker

On our way back from the mountain, we also visited the famous bunker. It had once been built to protect the population in case of an eruption but sadly, it became a grave for the people who were hiding inside it, as the hot gases entered the bunker and killed them. 🙁

We made a film for you during our trip. It’s a bit long, but I advise you to watch it until the end. The end was the fun part! 😆

All wet after the river cruise

All wet after the river cruise

After our Jeep Adventure, I was pretty wet but luckily we had good weather and so I dried almost completely on the way back to the Jeep checkpoint.

Looking forward to our next stop

When we departed, I could hardly wait to arrive at our next destination…
